The SÍSL programme (an acronym which in English translates as specialist team in a society that learns) has been set into motion in the Icelandic municipalities of Akranes and Mosfellsbær.

Participants receive training in best practices in the area of second language learning and teaching and in training connected to the participants’ actual experience in their workplaces (6+1 Trait, PALS and SIOP).

The programme is innovative in that it assumes that all teachers are second-language teachers, that language learning is something that goes on in all areas of school life, not just in special classes. Further, the programme trains participants from all levels of local education, from preschool to secondary schools, giving educators who might never had worked together a chance to share their experiences, insights and networks with one another.
