Participate in the ESU’s Int’l Public Speaking Competition and you could WIN A TRIP TO LONDON in May 2012.

If you are student at an Icelandic school and will be younger than 20 years old by end May 2012, you could compete to represent Iceland at this prestigious event.

The national event will take place in February, but a rep from ESU HQ in London will be in Iceland in early November to conduct a training session with students on improving public speaking skills. To sign up for this free session, or to get further information, please email Jón Ingi Hannesson at jiha@mh.is.

Björg is a mentor and supervisor of student teachers, particularly in the area of teaching English to young learners. She has been very active in developing ideas and materials for teaching English to young children and regularly shares her knowledge and experience with students in courses in English teaching methodology at the School of Education.

“Last year Hlíðaskóli organized a short story competition for the first time.

There were three categories, 5th – 6th grades, 7th – 8th grades and 9th –  10th grades.

We all know how important writing is for studying a foreign language, and creative writing even more so.

The best way to learn how to write a short story is to read many yourself, or to listen to them. That was a part of our English lessons, and will be this school year again.

The youngest ones were allowed to hand in cartoons they created in class with the help of the teacher. The older ones learned at school how to structure a short story and how to organize writing it.

The winners in all three categories received their book awards on the European Day of Languages, the 26th September. This little ceremony took place in the school´s library and the headmaster handed out the English books.”
